Bird watching in Assam & Arunachal Pradesh

Duration: 11 Nights/ 12 Days
Destinations Covered: Guwahati - Kaziranga National Park - Nameri National Park - Orang Wildlife Sanctuary - Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01 : Guwahati/ Deepor Beel / Guwahati
Guwahati is the best place to start, there are interesting bird watching sites to enliven a stay including one of the best place in the world to see Greater Adjutant at close range. Deepor Beel is an extensive wetland within the municipal limits of Guwahati 13 sq. km south west of the town centre. Many water birds winter here including Ferruginous Pochard & Grey-headed lapwing. An uncommon winter visitor, the solitary snipe & the extremely rare and endangered Goliath Heron have been reported from here.

O/n stay at hotel.

Day 02: Guwahati to Pobitora
Pobitora is a small 16 sq. km wild life sanctuary just 48kms east of Guwahati. A rear sighting of the highly endangered Rufousvented Prinia of the eastern population, regarded by some as a separate species, Swamp Prinia (burnesii) Cinerascens has been reported from the grasslands here. Overnight Forest I. B, Nowgong.

Day 03 : Pobitora To Kaziranga National Park
Famous as a last refuge of the Indian Rhinoceros, this superb 430 sq. km track of low-laying grass lands sprinkled with shallow beels and patches of open woodland has much to offer. It is probably the best place to see the endangered Bengal Florican & Swamp Francolin, Greater& Lesser Adjutant can be found alongside. While the graceful Black-necked stork retains a foothold here though declining elsewhere. There are good populations of Pallas's & Grey-headed Fish Eagles as well as Pied Harrier. The sought-after sport-winged starling occurs in large flocks in winter but is usually gone by March.

Day 04: Kaziranga / Panbari Reserve Forest / Kaziranga
Panbari, woodland is somewhat degraded but still holds good birds. Asian Fairy Bluebird & Black-crested Bulbul are common as are Abbots and Puff-throated Babblers, the latter two more skulking, haunting the under grown along with Palechinned Flycatcher. Both Oriental & Great Hornbills are frequent, but you need to be luck to see Wreathed Banded Bay and Drongo Cuckoos are relatively easy to see when they begin calling in late march.

Day 05 : Kaziranga / Dibru – Saikhowa
Kaziranga-Dibru-Saikhowa Wild life Sanctuary is the best Place to see birds such as the threatened marsh Babbler, Jerdons Babbler, Black-throated Parrotbill, Rutousvented (swamp) Prinia & Jerdons Bush chat was set up in 1986 in an attempt to protect their fast disappearing habitats. The 340 sq km reserve encompasses a patchwork of seasonally flooded forests, beels & grassy pockets between the braided arms of the rivers Dibru & Brahmaputra. Other interesting residents & altitudinal migrants such as Pale-Capped Pigeon, White-tailed Rubythroat & Black-breasted Thrush may be seen alongside a good assortment of wintering warblers.

Day 06 - Day 10: Namdapha National Park
Arunachal Pradesh in the extreme north east of India is one of the most biologically diverse parts of the subcontinent. Its avifauna is a unique blend of Himalayan, Sino-Tibetan & Indo-Burmese forms. Fabulous species such as Blyths Tragopan, wardsa Trogon, Rufous necked Hornbill, Blue-naped Pitta, Wedge-billed wren Babbler, Snowy throated Babbler & Beautiful Nuthatch are found in this remote region.

Day 11: Diboi
Diboi, in eastern Assam is a convenient last night’s stopover en route to Namdapha/Dibrugarh. Here explore the nature reserve being set up by the Indian Oil Cooperation to protect the lowland forest in & around the oldest operating oilfield in the world. Overnight stay guest house.

Day 12: Diboi / Dibrugarh
Drive back to Dibrugarh tour ends.
